"Skimming" is a fraud technique where credit card information is taken within a normal transaction or cash withdrawal.
There are a number of different techniques, but they all have one thing in common: a small electronic storage device has been attached to the ATM or reader to collect information while using the magnetic stripe or PIN to make a payment.
Tips for avoiding skimming:
- When paying at gas stations or withdrawing cash from an ATM, look closely at the card device. If anything looks different or conspicuous, avoid using that device.
- Make sure that no one can see you entering your PIN in person or via a video function. Keep your hand over the input pad while entering your PIN.
- Always use discretion when using ATMs.
